Wat is copyleft? Copyleft is een algemene methode om een ​​programma of ander werk vrij te maken, waarbij alle gewijzigde (modified) en uitgebreide (extended) versies van het programma ook vrij moeten zijn.

The GNU General Public License Protects Software Freedoms

Een GPL licentie verwijst naar de GNU's General Public License die veel wordt gebruikt voor open source-software (OSS), voor het eerst geschreven door Richard Stallman in 1989. Ontwikkelaars/Developers en organisaties gebruiken deze licentie om te voorkomen dat software eigendom wordt (becoming proprietary). Het verenigde vergelijkbare licenties die op dat moment beschikbaar waren, maar is in de eerste plaats een implementatie van de Free Software Foundation’s (FSF) filosofie en Stallman’s copyleft concept van softwareontwikkeling/software development en distributie. Richard M. Stallman, ook wel bekend als RMS, is de oprichter van de Free Software Foundation.

Onder een GPL licentie (of alleen GPL) kan een bepaalde gebruiker vrijelijk software gebruiken, wijzigen of herdistribueren zonder enige beperking. Een populair voorbeeld van software die gebruikmaakt van GPL is WordPress, wat betekent dat iedereen de broncode naar wens kan gebruiken, wijzigen of uitbreiden. Versies

De GPL werd voor het eerst geschreven door Richard Stallman en de Free Software Foundation (FSF) in 1989 en is door opeenvolgende versies verder ontwikkeld. Versie 2 is uitgebracht in 1991 en versie 3 is uitgebracht in 2007. Versie 3 is de laatste versie.

Zoals hierboven vermeld, wordt WordPress vrijgegeven onder versie 2 van de GPL. De linux kernel, geschreven door Linus Torvalds, welbekend als Linux, het GNU/Linux systeem is vrijgegeven onder de GPLv2.


Waarom GPL versie 3 gebruiken - Waarom upgraden van GPL 2 naar GPL 3?

Allereerst is het belangrijk op te merken dat upgraden een keuze is. GPL-versie 2 blijft een geldige licentie en er zal geen ramp gebeuren als sommige programma's onder GPLv2 blijven terwijl andere doorgaan naar GPLv3. Deze twee licenties zijn niet compatibel, maar dat is geen serieus probleem.

Als we zeggen dat GPLv2 en GPLv3 incompatibel zijn, betekent dit dat er geen legale manier is om code onder GPLv2 te combineren met code onder GPLv3 in een enkel programma. Dit komt doordat zowel GPLv2 als GPLv3 copyleft-licenties zijn: elk van hen zegt: "Als u code onder deze licentie opneemt in een groter programma, moet het grotere programma ook onder deze licentie vallen." Er is geen manier om ze compatibel te maken. We zouden een GPLv2-compatibiliteitsclausule aan GPLv3 kunnen toevoegen, maar dat zou niet werken, omdat GPLv2 een vergelijkbare clausule nodig zou hebben.

Gelukkig is licentie-incompatibiliteit alleen van belang als u code van twee verschillende programma's wilt koppelen, samenvoegen of combineren in één programma. Het is geen probleem om GPLv3-gedekte en GPLv2-gedekte programma's naast elkaar te hebben in een besturingssysteem. De TeX-licentie en de Apache-licentie zijn bijvoorbeeld incompatibel met GPLv2, maar dat weerhoudt ons er niet van om TeX en Apache op hetzelfde systeem te draaien met Linux, Bash en GCC. Dit komt doordat het allemaal aparte programma's zijn. Evenzo, als Bash en GCC naar GPLv3 gaan, terwijl Linux onder GPLv2 blijft, is er geen conflict.

Een programma onder GPLv2 houden zal geen problemen opleveren. De reden om te migreren is vanwege de bestaande problemen die GPLv3 zal aanpakken.

Een groot gevaar dat GPLv3 blokkeert, is tivoisatie. Tivoization betekent dat computers (“devices/apparaten” genaamd) GPL-covered software bevatten die u niet kunt wijzigen, omdat het apparaat wordt uitgeschakeld als het gewijzigde software detecteert. Het gebruikelijke motief voor tivoisation is dat de software functies heeft, waarvan de fabrikant denkt dat veel mensen het niet leuk zullen vinden. De fabrikanten van deze computers profiteren van de vrijheid die “free en opensourcesoftware” biedt, maar ze laten u niet hetzelfde doen.
Sommigen beweren dat concurrentie tussen apparaten op een vrije markt voldoende zou moeten zijn om vervelende functies op een laag niveau te houden.
